White Mountain National Forest Announces Kancamagus Anniversary Celebration

On Friday, August 14, the Kancamagus Highway will celebrate its 50 anniversary!
The White Mountain National Forest and White Mountains Attractions Association, along with several other partners have planned a day of fun activities and interesting programs.

Please join us for historic programs at sites along the Kancamagus Highway and at the Russell-Colbath Barn at 2pm for light refreshments at the official celebration. Maps will be available at visitor’s centers at either end of the Highway. National Forest Recreation Passes will not be required on Friday,August 14 along the Kancamagus Highway. Pick up your special pass at any of the six stops listed below, at the Russell Colbath Barn and at the Visitor Centers.


Pack a lunch and enjoy the Kancamagus Highway for the day. Remember food and fuel are only available at either end of the Highway.

Throughout the summer visitors have been asked to share their stories and memories of the beloved “Kanc” and those memories will be on display along with historic photos and exhibits about the history, construction and uses of the Kancamagus Highway (now a National Scenic Byway).

The Forever Locked exhibit - a life-size taxidermy exhibit of two battling bull moose will be just one of the exhibits at the Barn.

Celebration Schedule of Events: From 9:00am – 12:00noon the White Mountain National Forest will offer on-going short interpretive programs along the Kancamagus Highway at the following sites: All activities are free open to all!
Lincoln Woods Visitors Center
Discovery Trial
Pemigewasset Overlook,
Wangan Overlook
Albany Covered Bridge
Blackberry Crossing Campground

9:00am – 3:00pm: exhibits and historic house tours will be offered at the Russell Colbath Historic Site

2:00pm – 4:00pm: Official celebration ceremony at the Russell Colbath Barn.
