Gas Prices on the way to Lincoln, NH

I know that everyone is feeling the pinch of the high gas prices. I thought I would post here that the price of regular gas off Exit 23 on I-93 is $3.209/gallon at both the Irving and Mobil gas stations off this exit. These are the lowest prices I have seen in quite a while.

Of course they are subject to change but it is what they were at 8:30am on Friday March 25, 2011 when I filled up there.

Junkman Concert in Lincoln, NH on Friday March 15, 2011 at 6:30 pm

Join "Junkman" Don Knaack at a Concert in Lincoln Friday*

6:30pm, Friday, March 18: Lin-Wood Elementary School Multi-purpose Room, off Route 112, Lincoln ($8 adults; $15 families; students free).

Tickets available at the door. Supported by Loon Mountain as part of a daylong residency, and presented in partnership with Lin-Wood Public School and Friends of Lincoln Library.

Thanks also to Woodstock Inn for providing lodging.

Vermont musician Donald Knaack, aka "The Junkman," is guest artist for a five-day residency at North Country schools and community sites, celebrating both the Weeks Act Centennial and Music in the Schools Month. The residency, March 14-18, is coordinated by the Arts Alliance of Northern New Hampshire.

In addition to work at five public schools and several community sites from Errol to Campton, Don is presenting two public concerts (including one Friday, March 18, at Lin-Wood Public School in Lincoln) and a community workshop (Tuesday, March 15, at Kennett High School). Artists, educators and community members are invited to one or more of these public events!

Don's programs emphasize conservation and the environment and the ways in which recycled materials can be creatively repurposed to make musical instruments that anyone can play. You don't need to be a trained musician; anyone can pick up a piece of junk and play with "The Junkman."

Don has performed at The Kennedy Center & Lincoln Center, jammed at the Vans Warped Tour and Sundance Film Fest, written an opera with Norse gods and junk, and had his music featured in two ESPN television commercials. He has written a concerto for 300 pieces of junk and a full orchestra, and has appeared on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. His music appeals to a wide range of audiences who respond to the unique junk instruments as well as his background as a classically trained percussionist.

Don believes that music is a part of all of us, whether developed traditionally or not. Through his "Junkjams" people of all ages can get involved in producing something from nothing and creating music together. (A "Junkjam" is a community or school event during which all audience members are participants, developing both rhythmic counterpoints and improvisational sound.)

Workshop for Teachers, Students & Everyone Else" 7pm, Tuesday, March 15: Kennett High School Music Room, 409 Eagles Way, North Conway ($10 adults; students free). Preregistration requested but not required -- call 323-7302 or email info@aannh.org.

Don's residency is funded in part by the New England Foundation for the Arts through the NEA Regional Touring Progam, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the state arts agencies of New England, including the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, and by the New Hampshire Electric Co-op Foundation and TransCanada. Thanks also to our community partners and local business and hospitality sponsors, including Lin-Wood Public School, Friends of Lincoln Library, Loon Mountain, and Woodstock Inn.

A sign of the times

This is that time of year where you will start seeing these signs spring up along many of our roads. Heed these warnings or you might find yourself at the local auto repair center fixing a tire or having your car re-aligned.

With the recent rains and cold weather, the frost heave season is just warming up. I know some of you will come to Lincoln up I-91 thru Vermont and with the advice of your GPS will take Exit 15. If you like your car please ignore your GPS and take Exit 17 for Wells River. Once here take Route 302 East thru Woodsville. In Bath turn Right onto Route 112 East towards Lincoln.

There are stretches of Route 112 that will have many of these signs, but it will be far less than if you follow your GPS andf take Exit 15. I mention this because several of the resort gusts this week have mentioned this to me.

Consider yourself warned. Travel safe and take it easy when you see orange signs stuck in a snowbank.

Spring Skiing at NH Ski Resorts

SPRING ARRIVES AT NEW HAMPSHIRE SKI RESORTS

A deep base of snow, special events and values on lift tickets and season passes await NH guests

NORTH WOODSTOCK, NH, MARCH 2011 - As spring arrives at New Hampshire ski areas, so do fun events, discounted lift tickets and specials on 2011-12 season passes. The 2010-11 winter is one New Hampshire skiers and riders will remember for quite some time. Plentiful snowfall and consistent winter weather have made this one of the better winters in recent memory. As a result, all that snow has enabled most areas to offer skiing and riding on 100% of their terrain, even this late in the season. A deep base of snow has ensured a classic spring skiing season with uncrowded slopes, comfortable temperatures and discounted lift tickets.

Many traditions come along with sliding on snow in the spring. Among these are light-hearted special events that families and friends can enjoy while taking in the sun and enjoying the soft snow. Probably the most notorious of spring events are pond skimming events, where participants skim across an icy pond of water on their skis or snowboard trying to make it to the other side without going for a swim. Other offerings include on-snow golf tournaments, cardboard box races, live music, recreational family ski races, terrain park competitions, and more. For a complete listing of events offered this spring at NH ski resorts, visit SkiNH.com's events calendar.

As warmer temperatures move in, many skiers and riders thoughts wander to other summer activities and hobbies. Because of this, most NH ski areas offer discounts on their lift tickets to entice guests to keep hitting the slopes. Many ski areas simply discount their everyday lift ticket prices, while others create interesting and fun promotions. Many areas offer 2-for-1 lift ticket days or specify certain days of the week when discounts apply; you can find discounts in New Hampshire every midweek day this time of year. Some areas also have special events that include lift tickets as inexpensive as $1! For a complete listing of these deals across New Hampshire, visit the "Deals" page at SkiNH.com.

A more recent spring tradition is the sale of next year's season passes during the current spring ski season. These pass sales always offer a savings for buying in advance and most have deadlines in the next month or two. For a complete listing of 2011-12 season pass specials in NH, visit the "Season Pass" page at SkiNH.com.

"We hope people keeping hitting the slopes this spring well into April, and possibly even May, thanks to the very deep base of snow we currently have. The combination of good snow conditions, spring weather, scenery, affordable pricing and special events really create what many consider the most fun part of the ski season here in New Hampshire," added Karl Stone, Ski NH's Marketing Director.

Ski NH is the statewide association representing 37 alpine and cross country resorts and more than 200 lodging and guest service properties in New Hampshire. For more information on ski areas, lodging packages, and updated winter events at Ski NH resorts, call Ski NH at (800) 88-SKI-NH (800-887-5464) or visit the Ski NH website at www.SkiNH.com. For statewide media relations assistance, visit the New Hampshire Division of Travel and Tourism's media room at http://visitnh.gov/media/ or contact Mr. Tai Freligh at 603-271-2343, option #2.
