Winter Performances at Papermill Theatre

This Winter the Papermill Theatre will be offering 2 performances as well as 3 different concerts.  For the play productions you can book tickets through me and save $5 per person.

The first production is called Love Letters and will begin on Friday January 11, 2013.  Here is a brief synopsis of the show: 

The handwritten note leaves an indelible mark forever, not only on the ink-stained paper, but also in the heart of its reader.
American playwright A.R. Gurney knew this when he created his Pulitzer Prize nominated play Love Letters.
Love Letters, considered one of Gurney´s best and a classic of the American stage, tells the story of two people who grew up in the 1930s and whose lives become intimately entwined by the prolificacy of their pens. 

The second production will begin on January 18, 2013.  Here is a brief synopsis of the show: 

 HATE MAIL is described by the authors as “an epistolary play something like Love Letters, with two actors reading letters and other correspondence, but it's a little wilder and more hysterically funny. It tells the story of Preston, a spoiled rich kid who meets his match in Dahlia, an angst-filled artist. Their worlds collide when Preston sends a complaint letter that gets Dahlia fired from her job, and then there's no turning back. The play stays with their increasingly crazed correspondence as they move from hate to love, and then right back again”.

These production start a real life engaged couple Valerie Rigsbee and Gary DuBreuil.

The 3 Concert performances will be on January 12, 2013, February 17, 2013, February 18, 2013 and March  23, 2013.

The January 12 concert is Guy Davis.  Blues legend, Guy Davis, comes to Jean's Playhouse stage bringing his "blues made for humming along, stomping your foot, feeling righteous in the face of oppression..." - according to a popular men's magazine. Davis has performed with Conan O'Brien and nationally syndicated radio programs such as Garrison Keillor’s, “A Prairie Home Companion”, “Mountain Stage” or David Dye’s,“World Café”. You do not want to miss this one night only show.

The February 17 Concert will feature the Zydeco Princess Rosie Ledet. 

 Rosie Ledet & the Zydeco Playboys

The Princess of Zydeco Music at Jean's Playhouse. If you've seen Treme on HBO you have heard and love zydeco music. Rosie Ledet is an American Creole Zydeco accordion player and singer. 

The February 18 performance will feature the magic of Norman Ng. Norman Ng is a new kind of magician. His style is unique, energetic, and engaging. His magic is original and mind-blowing. His shows are hilarious and amazing.

Three-State Reciprocal Snowmobile Weekend - January 25-27, 2013

CONCORD, N.H. -- Snowmobile enthusiasts will have a chance to explore some new territory the weekend of January 25-27, 2013 (Friday through Sunday), during the New Hampshire-Vermont-Maine reciprocal snowmobile weekend.

Following are the ground rules for the weekend:

* All snowmobiles legally registered in Vermont and Maine will be able to operate on New Hampshire trails during the three-day open weekend. All other New Hampshire laws and rules regarding the operation of snowmobiles must be adhered to, such as speed limits, youth operation standards, etc.

* All snowmobiles legally registered in New Hampshire will be able to operate in Vermont and Maine during the reciprocal weekend. All other Vermont and Maine snowmobile laws and rules must be complied with, including Vermont’s mandatory liability insurance, safety education certification (if born after 7/1/1983), and youth operation requirements.

In addition to a law that passed in 2010 for the Vermont/New Hampshire reciprocity weekend, a new law passed in 2011 includes Maine in the three-day weekend, which will occur annually on the fourth weekend in January (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) provided that our neighboring states continue to participate.

This year the Lincoln/Woodstock area has several different holiday events going on during the months of November and December.


The Papermill Theater presents: A Christmas Carol

This year the Papermill Theater will be producing a version of Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol".  This show will be performed by NCCA’s own community theatre troupe The Playhouse Players.  The show will be  at  Jean's Playhouse which is located behind the Price Chopper Supermarket in Lincoln, NH.  The curtain will go up on Friday and Saturday starting on Friday November 30, 2012 at 7:30pm.  There will also be a Sunday matinee performance at 2:00pm.  Tickets are $25 per person.  If you order tickets thru me you can save $7 per person($18) plus also save the $5 convenience fee for ordering online.  Please email me or give me a call at (603)745-9900 ext 470.  (Email will be the only way to reach me until November 26)



Ride on the Ho-Ho-Hobo Santa Express

Christmastime at Santa's Village

Christmastime is "the most wonderful time of the year" -- especially at Santa's Village.

What's new at NH's White Mountain Ski Area for the 2012-13 Ski Season.

Here’s a look at some of the enhancements that guests will enjoy in the White Mountains this winter:

Loon Mountain, Lincoln - Loon is adding two new terrain parks built specifically for families; The Burton Riglet Park and Lil’ Stash. They are also opening the Hearthside Cafe, located in the Octagon Lodge at the main base area. The café will feature healthy lunch options.

Cannon Mountain, Franconia Notch - Cannon is spending a half-million dollars on snowmaking improvements this summer. Among the additions are dedicated snowmaking on Paulie’s Folly trail. New air and water lines are being installed on Upper Cannon and fan gun power pedestals are being added on Lower Cannon. A new twenty-foot automated, portable tower fan gun, one of the first of its kind in North America, is being added as well. Several trail enhancements are underway including removal of a tree island on the Tossup trail, which will allow for more snowmaking and a bigger terrain park. A new Prinoth Bison X terrain park groomer has been purchased to shape and smooth out all the snow.

Bretton Woods, Bretton Woods - This winter skiers and riders will find the addition of lift service to the Mount Stickney area of the resort. Bretton Woods recently added 30 acres of glades to the area that will now be serviced by a 2,000 foot Doppelmayr T-bar lift. The glades are also being expanded to include some steep drop-offs for adventurous experts as well as more wide-open glades for less-experienced skiers and riders. At the top of the lift a new 600-square-foot log cabin is being constructed. The cabin will feature an exterior stone fireplace as well as a porch for enjoying the sun on warmer days. Inside, a wood stove will warm skiers between runs. The popular Range View trail will be home to 50 new SV10 Impulse snowguns. In the base lodge guests will be able to select custom clothing, gear and accessories electronically at the new Bogner virtual clothing store, which will then be mailed to their home address. The recently constructed Canopy Tour, Williwaw Racing Zip and indoor climbing wall will also be available to guests this winter.

Cranmore Mountain Resort, North Conway - Over the summer Cranmore is replacing its historic East Double Chair with a triple chairlift. The lift will increase uphill capacity and add 300 feet of vertical drop to the resort’s southern slopes. The lift will also provide access to the summit of the mountain. Sixty new snow guns have been added to the resort’s arsenal, bringing the total of high-efficiency snow guns to 300. The Soaring Eagle Zipline installed this summer will operate all winter, joining the snowtubing park, mountain coaster and giant swing as alternative activities for winter guests.

Black Mountain, Jackson - More than $500,000 is being invested over the summer in snowmaking improvements including two new Ingersoll Rand Centac electric air compressors which will more than double the overall snowmaking capacity while reducing the area’s carbon footprint. Thirty-five low energy high-efficiency tower snow guns have been added to the primary race trail, Jackson Standard, as well as the Big Dipper, Maple Slalom and Black Beauty trails. A new beginners’ area is being completed with all-new snowmaking lines, hydrants and low energy, high-efficiency tower guns. Additionally, the new learning area will have a new dedicated surface lift. Improvements to the base lodge include an expanded ski school and ticketing area, a new day care and nursery area, fully renovated dining room areas, and expansion to the Lostbo Pub, more than doubling its size. An all-new ticketing system will provide guests with a quick and efficient ticketing experience.

Fall Foliage: Thoughts, Answers, and some more useful (or less) information

WHITE MOUNTAINS REGION 

If you’d like to see foliage in the White Mountains region, you need to get up there as soon as possible. Our leaf peepers here are reporting the last traces of peak color, with lots of falling leaves swirling around the landscape. With the bright reds and oranges gone, the majority of the remaining colors are rusts and yellows. Try viewing the colors during sunrise or sunset to boost up the glow a bit. Traveling the Kancamagus Highway along Route 112, Franconia Notch on Route 93, and Crawford Notch along Route 302 will reward the traveler with beautiful views no matter what the foliage is doing.

LAKES REGION

Look for peak fall color in the Lakes region right now! The vibrant reds, bold oranges and strong yellows are everywhere, and panoramic views will not disappoint those looking for the deepest colors of autumn. Lake Winnipesaukee is surrounded with stunning foliage, as are the other bodies of water in this area. Although you will see some bare trees, the majority of what is left are pastel oranges, yellows and bright greens sprinkled with hot pinks, all against a warm blue sky. You can’t go wrong no matter which road you take in your travels, but here are a few particularly scenic drives: Routes 3, 11 and 28 along the southern part of the region; Routes 25, 109 and 113 along the northern edge; and Route 171 from Ossipee to Moultonborough.

GREAT NORTH WOODS REGION

The fall foliage show is pretty much over in the Great North Woods region. Most of the colored leaves are scattered across lawns, fields and meadows, and what’s left on the trees is mainly burnished browns and shades of gold and amber. The good news is, the views are wide open and expanded with so many bare trees. Photographers will benefit from the cleared scenic vistas. Wildlife will be easier to spot as well. Increase your chances of seeing moose by traveling Route 3 from Colebrook to Pittsburg, and Route 26 through Dixville Notch. Use caution and keep your distance from these wild animals; they are very unpredictable during this rutting season. 

There are so many resources to find out when the leaves are changing.  I will attempt to list some of the ones that I find to be most useful.

There are numerous scenic drives which one can choose.  I have been known prefer many of the back roads that the region has to offer.  My advice is that if you see a dirt road, take it.  You never know what you may find, it could be wildlife such as a Moose or a spectacular pond with the colors reflecting.  Here are some scenic choices for you:


A MULTI-NOTCH MOUNTAIN RIDE (approx. 142 miles)
This loop has several variations. From Conway, turn west on Rt. 112, the Kancamagus Highway (locals call it the Kanc), which offers 37 miles of stunning mountain scenery through the White Mountain National Forest.
In Lincoln, you can either turn north onto I-93 through Franconia Notch State Park and its soaring mountain peaks, then onto Rt. 3 to Twin Mountain and the junction with Rt. 302 OR you can continue west on Rt. 112 through Kinsman Notch to Rt. 302, which heads to Bath, Lisbon, Littleton, Bethlehem, Twin Mountain and Bretton Woods, home of the Mount Washington Hotel . Rt. 302 continues east through Crawford Notch and past some of the most spectacular scenery in the East. In Bartlett, you can turn south on Bear Notch Road, a seasonal road that connects to the Kancamagus Highway west of Conway ; or you can join Rt. 16 in Glen and follow it back to your starting point in Conway.
If you turn north on Rt. 16 in Glen , you'll go through Pinkham Notch , past the Mt. Washington Auto Road the Ride to the Sky to Gorham and the Great North Woods Ride.

Rte. 112, Conway to Lincoln. Part of the White Mountains Trail. Passes through the White Mountain National Forest. Colonial history and forest ecology experiences offered along the way at the Russell Colbath Historic Site and Forest Discovery Trail.
Presidential Range Tour
Rte. 116, Littleton to Whitefield, then Rte. 3 to Lancaster to Rte. 2 E to Gorham, then Rte. 16 S to Glen, Rte. 302 W to Littleton. Four state parks, numerous scenic vistas and historic villages.
River Heritage Tour
Rte. 3, North Woodstock to Rte. 175 to Waterville Valley, then Plymouth Rte. 25 and 25C to Warren and Piermont, then Rte. 10 to Haverhill to Rte. 135 and Woodsville to Rte. 112 to North Woodstock. Superb views, river recreation, agricultural heritage, period architecture. White Mountain Trail Make a loop along the Kancamagus Highway to Rte. 16N to Glen and Rte. 302 West to Rte. 3 South to I-93, the Franconia Notch Parkway to Kancamagus Highway. Views include Mount Washington, Mount Washington Resort, mountain cascades, wildlife and the Appalachian Trail.
White Mountain Trail
The White Mountain Trail is a 100-mile route offering rugged mountain scenery, three historic "notches,? 7 covered bridges, roadside waterfalls, 32 scenic outlooks and historic and interpretive sites. The trail loops from Rte. 302 to 16, 3, I-93 and 112.

Lumberjack Competition on September 30, 2012

The 13th Annual Lumberjack Festival & Competition features fast and competitive action. Last year’s event attracted 75 competitors in several challenging events.
The day will start at 6:00 AM with a Lumberjack Breakfast prepared by Tri-County CAP’s outstanding chefs from Bethlehem, NH's Friendship House! Events such as cross-cut, modified chainsaw, stock chainsaw, women and men’s axe chop, women and men’s axe throwing, standing block chop, 2 person log rolling and more are sure to thrill! There will be a Log Rolling (Burling) contest and metal fishing derby for children, along with other children’s games.

A $7.00 admission fee for 12 years and older will be charged at this event. Under age 12 admitted free while accompanied by a paying adult.

Tag your Christmas Tree at the Rocks Estate

It's never too early to start thinking about the upcoming Holiday Season

The Rocks Estate, located in Bethlehem, NH invites Christmas tree seekers to visit the farm this fall to Tag-Your-Own tree – and the gaudiest tree is free!

Tag-Your-Own shoppers are encouraged to “tag” their trees with ornaments, ribbons, and whatever else it takes to distinguish that tree as their own. The showier, the better – and easier to find come cutting time. The tree tagged with the most outrageous display will be given to its tagger for free.

Early tree shoppers may visit the farm weekends beginning Sept. 22 through Oct. 21, when the farm opens regular hours for the holiday season. The Tag-Your-Own season corresponds with the glorious fall foliage season, when The Rocks and surrounding hillsides burst into a kaleidoscope of color.

The two shops at The Rocks Estate will be open for early holiday shopping during Tag-Your-Own weekends. Visitors may also embark on a self-guided tour of the interactive New Hampshire Maple Experience museum, located in one of the carefully restored historic buildings at The Rocks.

Tag-Your-Own trees will be available for pickup and payment from Nov. 17 through Dec. 24.

Fall Is Almost Here!

Fall in the White Mountains is my favorite time of year.  I love the crisp nights followed by warm days.  As I have been driving around I have noticed a little bit of color creeping into the landscape.  Gone are the numerous shades of green while being replaced with a splash of yellow, red, or orange.   A yellow tree here. A red swamp maple there.  The change occurs slowly at first, then with the first frost will quicken the pace until the middle of October.  Leaf peepers marvel at the work of Mother Nature while others curse a sign that Winter is just around the corner.

I am often asked when is the peek of fall foliage here in the White Mountains.  To everyone it is different. Ask 10 people get 10 answers.  My idea of peak may be slightly different than yours.  Most people say Columbus Day is the peak, but based on what I know it tends to be around Sept 30 or Oct. 1.

Friday, June 29

Jackson: Jackson Village, 9 p.m. Jackson Village and the surrounding communities come together to celebrate Independence Day. The Fireworks will be going off from the greens of the Wentworth Golf Course making easy viewing throughout Jackson Village but we do recommend that you come early to get a good spot. There will be ice cream, popcorn, glow necklaces, balloons and other fun stuff available from the Jackson Fire Department. This spectacular display is sponsored by our Jackson Town Selectmen, Red Fox Bar & Grille, the Wentworth Golf Club, Lisa Gardner, Inc., Black Bear Realty, Badger Realty, Bernerhof Inn, J-Town Deli & Country Store, and White Mountain Puzzles as well as other local businesses and residents.

Join the towns of Lincoln and Woodstock as we celebrate the most patriotic day of the year...Independence Day, Wednesday, July 4th 2011.
Our 4th of July Celebration starts off with Family Games at the Kancamagus Recreation Area. Make sure to arrive on time as the games begin promptly at 10am and are immediately followed by a BBQ lunch that you won’t want to miss out on!
Get your flags ready by 2pm for the start of our Patriotic Parade starting in N. Woodstock and continuing on Rt. 112 through Lincoln. After the parade, make sure you stick around for the awards presentation to see if your favorite float won!
After the parade, grab dinner at one of the delicious restaurants in Lincoln or Woodstock and then march over to the Woodstock Common for a patriotic concert. This FREE concert begins at 7pm and is a great way to continue your Independence Day Celebration!
By dusk it’ll be time to settle on Main Street Lincoln to watch the fireworks display light up the sky!

At 6 p.m., concert by Straightaway until fireworks. Midway and vendors from 11 a.m. Celebration begins on June 30-July 4 with activities over five days.

Laconia: 10 p.m., Opechee Park.

Lincoln and Woodstock: dusk, Hobo Railroad parking lot. Preceded by Patriotic Parade at 2 p.m., free Patriotic concert at 7 p.m.

Pittsburg: 10 a.m., Come up to the Murphy's Dam to enjoy a day of fun for the whole family. Browse the Flea Market, or bring your own table (no charge for sites). There will be plenty of food and vendors for everyone to enjoy. At the Lower Village Pond, let the kids (12 and under) enter the 'kids' fishing derby', pony rides for the kids, and ball games for all ages. At 6pm settle down for a chicken barbeque and listen to music until the fireworks begin at dusk.

Waterville Valley: 11 a.m. - 10 p.m. - Independence Day Celebration, Town Square. Traditional 4th of July Parade, family activities, live musical entertainment, and fireworks at 9:30 p.m.

Weirs Beach: 12:01 a.m., "The First Fireworks of Independence Day" - Weirs Beach will be closed and the fireworks are launched directly from the beach. Great viewing can be had from along the boardwalk or even out on the lake itself. This means you have to be there on Monday Night  Rain date: July 5.

Saturday, July 7

Bristol: dusk, over Newfound Lake. Kelley Park.

Franconia: Fourth of July and Old Home Day Celebration. Bring the family to the historic village of Franconia and experience an old time Fourth of July celebration. Watch the parade on Main Street, browse through the flea market tables, and compete in the famous Rubber Duck Race along the scenic Gale River. After a full day of activities, what better way to spend a balmy summer evening than listening to music outdoors, under the stars. To make the celebration complete, enjoy the magic of the fireworks display. The Old Home Day Celebration and Parade for the Towns of Franconia, Sugar Hill, and Easton are a long-standing tradition that you won't want to miss! Fireworks at dusk, Dow Field.

2012 Papermill Summer Theater Season

North Country Center for the Arts is a charitable non-profit organization that was founded in 1986 to support the arts in northern New Hampshire. Located in Lincoln, New Hampshire, North Country Center for the Arts is in the midst of a $2.6 million capital campaign to build Jean’s Playhouse, the year-round home to North Country Center for the Arts and the Papermill Theatre. Named for Jean Hallager, one of the prime contributors to the success of the Papermill Theatre, this new state-of-the-art facility will provide a venue for year-round theatrical, musical and visual arts, as well as community gatherings and events.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels – Based on the popular 1988 film, DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS centers on two con men living on the French Riviera. The first is the suave and sophisticated Lawrence Jameson, who makes his lavish living by talking rich ladies out of their money. The other, a small-time crook named Freddy Benson, more humbly swindles women by waking their compassion with fabricated stories about his grandmother’s failing health.
After meeting on a train, they unsuccessfully attempt to work together only to find that this small French town isn’t big enough for the two of them. They agree on a settlement: the first one to extract $50,000 from a young female target, heiress Christine Colgate, wins and the other must leave town. A hilarious battle of cons ensues, that will keep audiences laughing, humming and guessing to the end!

A Grand Night for Singing – Taste and imagination, the two key ingredients for a first-rate revue, abound in this fresh take on the Rodgers & Hammerstein canon conceived by Tony Award winner Walter Bobbie. Over three decades after the duo’s final collaboration, THE SOUND OF MUSIC, took the Great White Way by storm, it was in fact this new R&H musical that opened the 1994 Broadway season with flair and distinction, garnering wildly enthusiastic notices as well as earning two Tony nominations, including Best Musical. Rodgers and Hammerstein probably never imagined ‘Shall We Dance?’ as a comic pas de deux for a towering beauty and her diminutive admirer, nor did they suspect that one day a lovelorn young lad might pose the musical question, ‘How do you solve a problem like Maria?’ But that’s precisely the kind of invention lavished upon this new revue, with innovative musical arrangements including a sultry Andrews Sisters-esque ‘I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out-a My Hair,’ a swingin’ ‘Honeybun’ worthy of the Modernaires, and a jazzy ‘Kansas City’ which leaves no question about how terrifically up to date the remarkable songs of R&H remain.

Memorial Day Weekend 2012 Attraction Specials

Lost River Gorge honors Military families this Memorial Day weekend

North Woodstock, NH -- Military families will be honored this Memorial Day weekend at Lost River Gorge in N. Woodstock, New Hampshire. Military members past and present will be admitted free with ID; immediate military family members will receive a discounted rate. 

“The only time Lost River Gorge was closed in its history was during World War II, when most of its young staff – guides, kitchen workers and other help – were off serving their country in military service. The gorge remained closed for four years. 

This Memorial Day we want to honor the men and women who are protecting our country today,” says Lost River Manager Deb Williams. She added that on Wednesdays through the remainder of the season, Lost River will offer free admission to active military with ID, and their immediate family will receive a discounted rate.

The gorge was discovered in 1852 by two young brothers, Lyman and Royal Jackman, who were fishing the river when one of them slid out of sight and landed waist-deep in a hidden cave 15 feet below. Their discovery sparked great interest in the amazing natural site, and they began taking visitors on tours.  

Lost River Gorge, located on Route 112W in N. Woodstock, NH, is one of the oldest natural attractions in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. This year will mark 100 years of preservation of its natural beauty and habitat by the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests. A public celebration of their stewardship is planned for June 7.

Today Lost River Gorge is more than a climb through the caves. As part of the centennial celebration, guided tours will be offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 2pm through the 2012 season. The tours are available to the first 25 people at the general admission rate. Tours include information on the natural and cultural history of the gorge. 

Visitors meander along an intricate series of boardwalks, past gigantic granite walls, through boulder caves and beside beautiful Paradise Falls. The caves are optional, as visitors can remain on the main boardwalk throughout their tour.

Saturday evening lantern tours will begin in mid-June, and reservations are needed. A nature garden with native New Hampshire plants is beginning to blossom, and with new signage in place, visitors can learn to identify plants at all stages through the seasons. Evenings in July and August will feature a full schedule of educational programs.
