Governor: Most Major Routes Open, Visitors Can Get to Their Destinations
CONCORD – Most major routes are open and visitors will be able to reach their destinations for the Labor Day Weekend, said Governor John Lynch.
State transportation workers have been out across the state since the end of the storm. As of this morning, all but parts of seven state roads were open. DOT employees are repairing those roads or establishing detours and alternate routes where necessary.
“Visitors should know that they will be able to reach their New Hampshire destinations this Labor Day weekend,” Governor Lynch said. “The forecast is for a great weekend, and we invite out-of-state visitors and our own residents to explore all that New Hampshire has to offer this weekend.”
Visitors can get information about road conditions and road closures by calling 2-1-1 or on line at http://www.nh.gov/dot/511/index.htm.
DOT officials have worked with local officials to establish a detour to allow access to Route 49 and Waterville Valley and Thornton.
DOT is working to establish pedestrian access to Route 302 for residents of Hart’s Location. Drivers can travel on 302 in both directions, but will not be able to cross through the Sawyer’s River Bridge area.
The Kancamagus Highway is closed from Lincoln to Bear Notch Road, but DOT officials expect that sufficient repairs will be completed in time to re-open the road for fall foliage season.

Travel thru Vermont
I have heard many stories of people traveling through Vermont and having a hard time. There are many road closures in Vermont. Here is a link to Vermont DOT for updates.
I know if you take I-91 and head up along the eastern side of the state it is better. Roads such as Rte 4, Rte 100 and some other popular roads are closed and look to remain closed for at least a week.

Press Release from White Mountain National Forest
For Immediate Release: August 29, 2011
Contact: Tiffany Benna: (w) 603.536.6241 or (cell) 603.348.0078
White Mountain National Forest Recommends Waiting a Few Days to Recreate on the
Forest
The White Mountain National Forest has been responding to reports and assessing damage
across the Forest. Our focus is on safety and moving to recovery to get the Forest fully open as
safely and quickly as we can: however this may take time. Currently, we have assessed about
40 percent of major roads and developed sites across the Forest. There is still a lot of ground to
cover and many unknowns, especially backcountry conditions. Therefore even though an area
or trail may be open, caution and good judgment should be exercised. Visitors are strongly
encouraged to wait a few more days before coming to recreate.
While the Forest will be open on Tuesday, August 29, certain areas, roads, sites, or trails will
remain closed due to hazardous conditions, high water, wash outs, unsafe bridges or other
impediments. Heed signing and check the website for updates. A list of areas and sites that are
closed will be available in the morning.
Visitors who choose to recreate in the next few days should expect to encounter hazardous
conditions. Heavy rains have swollen rivers and streams. Some trails may be impassable due to
high water. Never enter high water areas or approach fast moving water. Keep your distance.
Turn back if necessary.
Extremely high winds from the recent weather event has created blow down around the Forest.
Trees, limbs and debris may block trails, impact campgrounds, and make roads impassable. Be
aware that you may have to turn around. High winds may have also created hazards such as
leaning trees or weak limbs that may come crashing down in the aftermath. Be aware of
potential hazards in the area and above you.
Many roads have been damaged by the storm and remain impassable or dangerous. Washouts,
compromised bridges, soft shoulders, blockage due to blow down, are but a few of the hazards
to be expected. Heed road closures. Do not go around gates or road barricades. The State of
NH has a list of road closures across the state, including state roads that access the Forest:
http://www.nh.gov/readynh/index.htm.
The Forest will continue assessing damage. Please report any storm damage you encounter –
whether on a road, trail, recreation site or campground to the White Mountain National Forest at
(603) 536-6100. We will continue to keep our website updated with latest current conditions as
they become available: www.fs.fed.us/r9/white.

Loon Mountain
Good Morning and what a beautiful morning it is! We are OPEN for business today so come on by and enjoy the day. Please note, the main bridge is closed. Follow the sign at South Peak Resort in Lincoln to get to Loon Mountain. Thanks!
Hobo Railroad Unfortunately, the tracks are still not ready for trains. Please keep your fingers crossed and maybe they will be ready on Wednesday. :)
Attitash Ski Area Great news! Staff worked hard today to clean up after flooding and we'll re-open Alpine Slides, scenic chair, waterslides, Buddy Bear's Playpool, climbing wall, & Eurobungy Wednesday, August 31. Unfortunately, more work required to re-open downhill mountain bike trails and horseback trails remain under water, so will not be open Wednesday. The biggest hit is that it may be weeks before we can re-open the Mountain Coaster, but silver lining is that it was primarily only base area erosion.
Lost River Crew members and staff worked hard on Monday in the gorge to remove debris left from Hurricane Irene. Water levels still remain high in the gorge though. We are opening the the main building, gift shop and mining sluice tomorrow (Tuesday) at 9am. Our goal is to get part of the lower gorge open for Wednesday and be fully operational by the weekend. Please check back here for further details as they become available.
Mount Washington Auto Road After assessing the damages to the Auto Road we anticipate opening later this week. We will keep you updated as often as we can. Stay safe with any of your efforts to clean up.
Conway Scenic Railroad Conway Scenic Railroad is running, and all departures this week will be to Conway. Due to track damage that's been identified as a result of Irene, we don't expect to have the Bartlett and Notch trains in operation this week. We'll continue to post updates as we have them.
Bretton Woods and Mount Washington Resort Access to Mount Washington Resort and Bretton Woods is a little limited at the moment, but the Bretton Woods Adventure Center is open today, and we hope to have the two golf courses open tomorrow to try to bring a little fun back to the lives of those in the area.

Wishing all of our neighbors and friends a speedy recovery from Irene! The Conway Valley Train is running, and the 11:30 departure is boarding now. All departures this week will be to Conway: 10:30, 11:30, 1:30, 2:30, 4:30, and 6:00. No dining car service today or tomorrow due to access issues with our restaurant partner, Attitash in Bartlett. Due to track damage that's been identified, we don't expect to have the Bartlett and Notch trains in operation this week. We'll continue to post updates as we have them. Thanks, Everyone, for your good wishes and support!

FISH AND GAME: BE OUT OF THE WOODS AND OFF THE WATER BY SATURDAY EVENING
FISH AND GAME: BE OUT OF THE WOODS AND OFF THE WATER BY SATURDAY EVENING
CONCORD, N.H. -- The State of New Hampshire will experience a significant weather event this weekend, which will likely bring high winds – including the possibility of hurricane force winds – and heavy rains, which could cause flash flooding, particularly in small streams and rivers. Due to the severity of this storm, N.H. Fish and Game Department Executive Director Glenn Normandeau is urging all outdoor enthusiasts to be out of the woods, off the water and headed for home by Saturday evening.
"It is unlikely that search and rescue operations will be feasible during the height of the storm. For that reason, we are urging the public – whether you're hiking, camping, fishing or boating anywhere in the state – to complete your outdoor recreation and get home by Saturday night. For your safety and the safety of rescue personnel, get out of the woods and off the water by Saturday evening,” Normandeau said.
Campgrounds and day use areas in all New Hampshire State Parks, Forests and Trails, will be closed from 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 27, through Monday, August 29. Parks plan to reopen on Tuesday morning. The reopening of the parks will be subject to any damage and debris removal needed in the aftermath of the storm.
The National Forest Services has also informed the State that all trails and campgrounds in the White Mountain National Forest will be closed. Appalachian Mountain Club huts will also be closed. Trailheads will be posted and parking lots gated. Those in the hiking community are urged to spread the word to fellow hikers and backcountry campers.
Anticipated heavy rains can cause flash flooding that can turn tiny mountain brooks into raging, impassable torrents without notice. Statewide, all waterbodies are expected to rise, and flows to become too swift and strong to navigate safely. Boaters are advised to stay off waterbodies statewide on Sunday and stay off until conditions improve.
