Fall Foliage Report Sept. 30, 2009

Great North Woods Region Foliage Report

Spectacular fall colors are taking over the Great North Woods region. Maple trees which were still green last week are now becoming splashed with bright oranges and vibrant reds. The colors are changing at all elevations now, and it will just be a matter of days before this area reaches peak fall foliage. Moose are being sighted frequently along Routes 26 from Errol to Colebrook and also along Route 3 from Pittsburg to Canada. The area overall is nearly 75% changed.

White Mountains Region Foliage Report

More beautiful foliage awaits you in the White Mountains region. Most roads throughout the area are coloring up nicely, including Route 302, especially through Crawford Notch; Route 2, which provides panoramic views of Mount Washington and the Presidential Range; and Route 112, the Kancamagus Highway, mostly on the western end. Waterfalls are framed in splashes of yellow, red and orange right now, and covered bridges are surrounded with color. The towns of Franconia, Easton and Sugar Hill – all accessible by Exit 38 off Interstate 93 – are drenched in bright fall colors right now and are worth exploring.

Fall Foliage Report 9/24/09

Grab your camera and start exploring.

In the past 2 days I have driven around the region from Lincoln to Lancaster up to Groveton over to Stark, and then up to 13 Mile Woods in Dummer & Milan. I have also driven around Twin Mountain, Franconia and Bretton Woods. There is some incredible color to be found. I found the area along Route 3 off Exit 35 up into Twin Mountain to be excellent. The stretch of road along Route 302 heading towards Crawford Notch is spectacular with color.

As you are out and about watch for slower drivers and people making sudden turns or stops as they hop out of their car for that picture.

White Mountains Region Foliage Report

The White Mountains Region is showing a blast of color in and around the area of Waterville Valley. Our leaf peepers in this part of the state are recommending visitors to travel Route 93 to Exit 28 and follow Route 49. This winding road runs alongside rocky Mad River, and provides mountain views. There are lots of fiery reds, rusty oranges and occasional bright yellows all along this drive. On the eastern side of the region, Route 16 through Pinkham Notch is coloring up nicely, and the view of Mount Washington from here is worth the trip. Continue on Route 16 to Gorham, and take a left onto Route 2 west; continue to Route 115, and take Route 302 west in Twin Mountain. The Local Works Farmers Market and Outdoor Marketplace along Bethlehem’s Main Street on Route 302 is open on Saturday from 9am to 1pm; take home some locally grown food, baked goods, crafts, flowers and plants while you enjoy music and demonstrations outside.

Great North Woods Region Foliage Report

It’s autumn splendor in the Great North Woods region! Our leaf peepers are reporting 60% color change on the west side of the area, while the eastern side is nearly 40% changed. Roadside trees are showing spectacular reds and oranges, and mountain views are getting more colorful each day. The area is expected to reach peak foliage by early October. Visitors will want to travel Route 110B from Milan to Route 110A to Route 16 north. Follow Route 16 along the Androscoggin River to Route 26 in Errol. Route 26 winds through Dixville Notch to Route 3 in Colebrook, and provides stunning views of Mount Magalloway. Stop at the Great North Woods Interpretive Center on Route 3 for maps and area information. Follow Route 3 north toward Pittsburg and beyond for beautiful views along the Connecticut Lakes. This road will almost always guarantee a moose sighting, so stay alert and have your camera ready.

Lakes Region Foliage Report
The fall foliage in the Lakes Region is becoming more vibrant with each day. Here’s a back roads trip that will provide plenty of deep reds and rusty oranges all over: begin on Route 28 in Wolfeboro – the ash trees along the downtown are turning from bright green to shimmering yellow. Take Route 109A to Route 109 through Moultonborough and continue to Center Sandwich. This trip runs past watery areas surrounded by red and orange maple trees. From here, you can either take Route 113 south to Route 3 south toward Holderness and Ashland, or go north on 113 to Tamworth.

Fall Foliage Report 9/16/09

From Fall 2009

White Mountains Region: Some spotty color is coming to life in the White Mountains Region. Most of the area is mainly green, but leaf peepers are reporting that flashes of red are showing up around waterways and along some roadsides. Route 302 through Crawford Notch is showing some color change, and so is Route 49 through Waterville Valley. Overall, the colors are just beginning in this part of the state. but will be spectacular when they reach their peak. Traveling through Franconia Notch State Park is a great family day trip - be sure to visit the Flume Gorge and also Boise Rock, where a brave New Hampshire man sought shelter under during a vicious winter storm in the early 1800's.

Great North Woods: Some colorful changes are taking place in the Great North Woods Region, also called New Hampshire's Grand North. The swamp maples along the rivers and higher elevations are showing some nice bright reds, a sure sign that fall will be arriving quickly. Mountain slopes are mainly green with hints of red and yellow coming to life. Route 26 from Errol to Colebrook is a dramatic scenic drive. A few more evening frosts will bring this area to peak fall foliage soon.

Northern Forest Heritage Park

Over the last couple of years I have had many requests to do some type of Historical Tour of the region.

I recently discovered a place called the Northern Forest Heritage Park in Berlin, NH. The park is a replica of a logging camp circa 1900. I Berlin was a city that was founded on the Timber Industry and was a major hub of this activity in the late 1800's and early 1900's. The last run of logs down the Androscoggin River occured in 1964.
From Northern Heritage Park

This past Wednesday we took our first trip there with a group of about 16 people to the park to see how it would be. We were met by a tour guide who walked us thru the park down to the boat launch. There we divided the group into 2 groups so that some could do the River Ride and the rest could receive a guided tour of the park. The park will be host to a Lumberjack Competition in ealry October.

From Northern Heritage Park

We started out at the Filers Cabin. The Filer was responsible for sharpening the saws for the lumberjacks. He knows the saws need to be sharpened differently depending on the type of woods being cut and the time of year.

From Northern Heritage Park

Next we went to the Horse Hovel. This is where the Teamster lived and took care of the horses. What the horses were used for depended on their size. Smaller horses were used singly to drag logs to the cutting area. Larger animals were teamed and used to pull sleds and tote supplies. The very biggest are used to drag large logs. The Teamsters usually slept in the hovel as the horses often smelled better than the loggers.

From Northern Heritage Park

Next it was off to the Blacksmith. The Blacksmith was usually one of the first perople to arrive at the end of Summer. He spends long hours in his shop building logging sleds, complete from runners to poles, maintaining and designing logging tools and chains, building whiffle trees, and acting as a farrier and veterinarian.

Our next stop was that of the cabin which house the Scaler (he measures the work out in teh forest), the Boss who is responsible for the entire camp , and the Clerk who keeps track of wages earned and things the workers purchase in the company store.

From Northern Heritage Park

The last stop was the Cookhouse and Bunkhouse. The Cookhouse was where the loggers ate their meals. The Lunch Room Rules from circa 1920: 1. Please don't spit on the floor. 2 Don't drink the catsup. 3. Don't lick the mustard paddle. 4. Don't come here to loiter and think. 5. This place is here to eat and drink.

I will be making a 2nd entry about our visit here later today.
